Gainsborough Trinity
John - Matchday 2
This weekend saw the second instalment of our Volunteer Recognition Awards as we made the trip to Lincolnshire to visit the home of Gainsborough Trinity FC, the KAL Group Stadium.
Following a conversation with Club Secretary, Matt Boles, it was clear to us why John stood out so much as a valued volunteer, having been at Gainsborough Trinity for over 25 years. Upon entering the ground, John was immediately there with the raffle tickets for the half time draw, although we didn’t know it was him, and after purchasing our tickets, we set off in search of him!

Full circle completed, Scott Bruton managed to have a chat with him about why he still comes to Northolme, and what drives him to continue to volunteer in non-league football.
John is a huge football fan, he has been his whole life, and he sees it as his way to give something back to the game he has enjoyed for so long. He is more aware than most that clubs cannot function without volunteers, was keen to know more about the volunteer set up at Ashton United, and excited to chat with some of our volunteers at the game. He doesn’t often travel to away games, but has said he will make an exception for Trinity’s visit to Hurst Cross later in the season, and we look forward to welcoming him.
Tuesday’s weather in Warrington was not conducive to short sleeves (and quite rightly, Bob kept his big coat on) but Saturday gave us the first chance to see one of the nominees proudly wearing their Volunteers Matter shirt, whilst continuing to sell half time draw tickets around the ground.

Everyone at Ashton United FC Supporters Club, Ashton United in the Community, and Ashton United Football Club would like to wish John and all of the other volunteers, supporters and staff at Gainsborough Trinity the very best for the rest of the season.

We all recognise and will continue to support the fantastic work carried out by volunteers around the country that help to bring us the beautiful game.
