Steve Johnson - Matchday 8

This week's volunteer recognition award was completed over 2 visits to Hyde United Football Club, thankfully not the furthest trip we make this season, after someone (who shall remain nameless) forgot to put Steve's shirt in the kit box on Saturday morning. . .

Fortunately, his ever presence at the football club meant that this was easily rectified on Sunday afternoon as the Project Solar Stadium played host to Curzon Ashton women's team's game against Chester le Street Town.

Speaking to Steve on Saturday, he told Scott Bruton that he has been watching Hyde United for over 60 years, since he was a school boy.

He is currently a director at the community club, and the treasurer, but his footballing journey with Hyde United has included a variety of other roles at the club, including groundsman and caterer.

What keeps him coming back every week is the family atmosphere and he knows that non-league clubs wouldn’t be able to survive without the hard work and contributions that volunteers up and down the country make to their clubs!

We enjoyed a beer in the clubhouse after the game, and along with numerous players who have represented both Tameside teams, dissected a game that produced a fair point for both teams. As is very often the case, his popularity amongst other members of the club's playing staff, volunteers and fans was obvious to see, with so many different aspects being discussed in that hour.

Ashton United Football Club & Ashton United FC Supporters Club would like to wish our neighbours the very best as they continue their NPL campaign, and we are looking forward to seeing Steve and his fellow supporters at Hurst Cross in February.

If you are interested in volunteering at your local club, please get in touch with them, or you can visit the FA website for more information and opportunities.
